THE NEW NDSC LIST SERV

What is a list serv?

When e-mail is addressed to a list serv or mailing list, it is automatically broadcast to everyone on the list. The result is similar to a discussion group or forum, except that the messages are transmitted as e-mail and are available only to those individuals on the list.

The NDSC Listserv is only open to docents and museum staff who work with docents. When you submit a message to our List Serv, your message is relayed to all those on the list. Likewise, you receive messages from other docents and staff via e-mail. It is similar to computer conferencing, but a list serv is asynchronous.

Why join this list serv?

Creating this listserv is just one more way the NDSC is helping to provide docent education and the exchange of ideas. If a docent or staff member is having a docent related problem, they can go on the list serv and ask other docents or staff what they do or what they suggest. It should be a very helpful tool for our subscribers.

What does it cost?

There is no cost to our subscribers. It is a free service provided by the NDSC.

How do I join?

To join you must register with our NDSClist moderator. To register send in your name, the name of the institution you work for, indicate whether a docent or staff and provide your e-mail address. Once you send this information to the NDSC moderator, you will receive an invitation to join the NDSClist.

Once you have received your invitation, just follow the directions on your invitation. The NDSClist is part of Yahoo Groups. You must be a member of Yahoo to get on the list. If you do not have a Yahoo ID, they will ask you to join. No reason to be afraid to join. It does not commit you to anything and it is free. It does provide you another e-mail address, if you would like to use it, but you do not have to use it at all.  If you have any problems or questions, please contact our Moderator.
