History of the Council

The first National Docent Symposium was organized by a group of docents from the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1981. In 1985 it was voted that docents from facilities of all disciplines, in addition to fine art institutions, should be eligible to attend the Symposium. It was also at this time that the concept of a National Docent Symposium Council was formalized.

In 1988 the National Docent Symposium Council met in Washington, D.C. to draft bylaws. Also, at that meeting the Council was incorporated as a non-profit organization under the laws of the State of California, and federal tax-exempt status was obtained. In 1998 the Council obtained a permanent mailing address in California, and in 2001 the Council web site was developed.
