Director Recruitment

The National Docent Symposium Council is seeking committed volunteer docents from all museum disciplines interested in serving as a director on the NDSC. The Council is composed of two directors from each of the six American Association of Museums (AMM) regions and two directors from Canada.

Directors are elected by the Council from the applications submitted by volunteer docents. Applicants must be in good standing at their museum and be a delegate to the Symposium. Criteria for selection is based on the qualifications of the applicant as well as geographic location and the museum discipline represented.

Directors serve a term of two consecutive Symposia (i.e. four years). The Council meets annually at the Symposium and in the alternate years at the site of the next Symposium to conduct Council business. Council business includes the promotion and review of The Docent Handbook and providing guidance to all future Symposia sites and to continue the Council's ongoing commitment to promote communication among and education of Docents.

Directors are expected to attend Symposia and Council meetings and are responsible for all costs of attending the four Council meetings. Symposia and Council meetings are held in either the Spring or Fall.

Additional Director duties include:

To serve on one of the committees
Promote the NDSC in their region
Promote and participate in the selection of sites for future Symposia
Participate in a variety of committees that assist the Council to achieve its objectives
Report on Council activities to their own museum and museums in region
Report to Council on museum activities in own region.
